18 October 1888 — La Punta, Longarone
Thursday. 18th [October 1888]. At 8.30 A.M. we got into Malcolm’s carriage, left our kind host & went off to pay a visit to the Ct & Css Brandolin at their castle of Valmarino. Splendid weather. A good deal of snow on all the hills round. We had ordered a carriage from Vittorio to meet us at the Sega just outisde Vittorio. The fly by mistake was sent up to an inn called La Secca beyond Sa Croce. However we did not change carriages till we got to the Sega as we know the post horses would never take us the distance if we took the loaded carriage all that way. At the Sega we stopped ¼ hour to change our luggage & rest the poor beasts & then drove on to Valmarino getting there about 2.30. We were not expected & walked up the steep ascent to the castle. Little Brando met us & ran in to announce our arrival. They had not understood my letter as to the hour of our arrival wh was fortunate as we arrived much later than we had intended. The harvest of indian corn was going on & it was very pretty along the road to see the carts heaped up with the golden corn knobs. We had some luncheon & then went down to the Latteria which has been rebuilt & is admirably arranged & managed. At 7.30 we dined, in the evening the priest, the agent & another gentleman came to play tresette with the Count.
