30 October 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 30th October [1888]. The Grand Duke came to see us. He called about 4 & as I was out left word he would return to tea. He came at 5 quite alone & remained with us half an hour chatting most pleasantly on pictures &c & on taking leave of me he kissed my hand & thanked me for all our kindness & said he hoped we should not forget him but should go to see him at Saxe-Weimar. He would not allow Henry to go down to the front door to see him off as he said he was now a friend of the house & wished to be treated as such. Mr Bartlett came to call & he & Mr Browning Jr dined with us.
