4 November 1888 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Sunday. 4th November [1888]. I got up at 8 & early breakfast in our rooms. Mme Pisani had telegraphed to Mr Ralph Curtis & to Mr Brown to ask them to come here today & it was to be kept as a surprise to every one Mrs Brown included—& great was her surprise when he walked into her room. We lunched at 12 & directly after we were packed off to drive to Este, I took Marie Bunsen, Ola & Mr Brown with me in one carriage. Henry, Mrs Brown & Nela came in the other. We got there in little more than 1¾ hour & drove to the house of the Css lawyer who has a small museum in his house of the Roman antiquities dug up in the neighbourhood. After staying some time to look at them & some earlier undecipherable inscriptions we walked to the town museum where there is quite a large number of things. We went into the cathedral & found the “Doctina” just finishing & the boys broke up from the lesson with a whoop & a clatter wh sounded to us very horrid in a church. We saw but did not admire the picture by Tiepolo behind the High Altar. We set off home about 4 & got home for tea at 7.30. We found Mr Curtis arrived from Venice. Ola was very tired & lay down on a sofa in the sala & we all sat round about talking till time to dress for dinner. We had a very lively dinner & much joking & laughing. In the evening music.
