5 December 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 5th December [1888]. We breakfasted at 8 & Henry & I went off to Vicenza by 9.15 train to see Cortelazzo who is very ill & suffers dreadfully in the head. We reached Vicenza at 11 & were met by Angioletto the scholar of C. & the smart brougham lined with blue satin which Cor: was stupid eno’ to buy at Florence. The weather was splendid & the country delightful. It was a 20 minute drive from the station to the Villa Sa Croce Begolini. We found that Cortelazzo was better & up but he seemed to walk with a great deal of difficulty. He had his head wrapped up in a red knitted light fitting cap & looked very thin & pale, but he revived a great deal with delight at seeing us & even got to walk better & insisted on taking us about to see his beasts. He had a pair of silver pheasants just arrived from Florence– He had an eagle & 2 monkies besides 3 horses & a great many canaries. His great anxiety is to embellish & finish the Villa with our arms everywhere so that it may be fit for us to live in when he dies as he insists on leaving it to us. Signora Cortelazzo says the Dr gives a very bad acct of him & thinks the pain in the nape of his neck is the beginning of paralysis. We had very good coffee with them. There was also the wife of Angioletto there & then bid them goodbye & drove back to the station to leave by 12.30 train for Venice. Met at the Station Css Viola who came to see a friend off. I had a bad headache so could not eat lunch out of the basket we had brought with us. Got to Venice at 2.40. Had to lie down my head being so bad & had tea in the studio. Ola & Nela had been to Mrs Curtis to hear Browning read his poetry & had enjoyed it. I went down to dinner but had to go to bed directly after.
