19 December 1888 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 19th [December 1888]. Wrote letters & directed cards & tidied & arranged the drawing rooms with Ola. At 4.30 Mr Malcolm called for me & took me on board the P&O. Henry followed with the girls. It was bitterly cold & a hard frost when we started but the weather changed, the fog blew away, the frost disappeared & there was a scirocco blowing by the time we returned so sudden is the change of weather here. The DuGués, Montenegros, Andrians & a good many others were there & we sat solemnly down to tea in the saloon, everything was lighted with electric lights. After tea some rockets were sent up & abt 6.30 we returned home. After we sat down to dinner Marzials turned up & we looked over the carols together till 10.30 when he went home & we to bed.
