16 January 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 16th [January 1889]. Painted & took a harmonium lesson. We went all of us to a great lunch party at Mr Malcolm’s– Met Mr & Mrs Browning, Mrs & Mr Brown, & Mrs Eden at lunch. A magnificent entertainment with every delicacy. It lasted till past 3. After eating so much Ola, Dora & Nela begged to go out rowing & Mr Brown offered to accompany them so they started off together. Leo & Henry went home & I went with Carry Eden to pay some visits. We went to Css Albrizzi’s whose “day” it was—thence to call on the “Prefettessa” also her “day.” We found a fat little body sitting in a tremendous drawing room, with one caller, a man. She is still young (Bss Brescia Morra) & may have been pretty but she is evidently not “de societé.” She was plainly dressed but sat with her hands in a muff. After we had paid a visit of a decent length we were glad to get away & went on to Css Olga Mocenigo where we found a good many callers. All went away soon except Adl & Mme Noce & us & when we wanted to go Olga would not let us & made us remain on. At 6 I went home. Olga came & dined with us. At 9.30 I took Leo & Nela to Mrs Bronson’s. It was her evening at home & we found everyone occupied in manufacturing cotton wool birds for gentlemen & ladies to adorn themselves with at Mrs Bronson’s next dance on Wedy next. It seemed to me very hideous & very silly. We did not stay very late.
