6 February 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 6th [February 1889]. I copied out music for our guitar band. Mme Nevada & Dr Palmer, Pss Dolgorouky & Mrs Eden came to lunch. Mr Malcolm & Css Canevaro were to have come but did not. Lady Galway came directly after. We had a guitar band practise till tea time when Bn Warsberg came to call & told me all the terrible story of the death of the Arch Duke. How that he was in love with a girl called Marie Vetsera & they were at Meyerling together. That the girl was found dead in the bed & the Prince also. It is supposed he murdered her & then committed suicide. M. Vetsera’s mother was a Mlle Ballazzi of Consple & her mother again a Miss Garrell who after the death of M. Ballazzi married Mr Alison Henrys great friend as they were attache’s together. Marzials dined with us at 7.30. Patience in evening.
