11 February 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 11th February [1889]. Tremendous hard day’s work at Ola’s bust from breakfast till lunch at 1—& afterwards till 4 without stopping. At 4.30 Ola & I walked to Palazzo Rezzonico to have tea with Mr & Mrs Browning who have their housewarming. Met the Edens, Edith Bronson &c &c. The Brownings recd in the mezzanin in what is called the Pope’s appartment. It looked very pretty & clean but was very cold. They have not gone to sleep there yet—& only spend the day there. I had usual Monday eveng party & they danced till past 2. It is the last time I receive this winter as I found that Css Papadopoli has fixed to give a ball on 25th & as the Prefet has a ball on 18th & the Red Cross on 4th March. Thus society loses 3 parties at my house & chooses deliberately to do so—besides giving me a hint that they dont care to put me on one side. The society here is truely provincial & mal elevé.
