6 April 1889 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 6th April [1889]. Noticed a slight swelling in my chest was increased & made up my mind to send for the Dr but forgot it today. Went shopping in the morning. Fred came to lunch at 1 & he & Henry drove off to the Court meeting & dinner at the Huguenot Hospital in Victoria Park. Visit from Sir Alfred Trevelyan who kindly brought me flowers—also visit from Lord Aberdare who promised to dine with us next Tuesday if I can get the Spanish Ambr. As soon as they were gone I had to hurry off to dress to go to Blanche’s children’s Concert at No 15. As I was starting I got a note from Sir A. Trevelyan saying Audrey would like to go with me so I went to 74 Harley St to fetch her. We were there in pretty good time– Only one piece was over. Blossett Alderson’s little boy of 10 played the piano very well & recited poems to perfection—it was painful to hear a child of 10 recite like an old man of the world & a 1st rate actor. 5 of Blanche’s children sang—& Ivor’s 2 youngest Lionel & Rosie. After tea I walked Audrey home & then went on to see Lady Thompson who was at home & Sir Henry joining us we had a pleasant chat. I walked on to Maria’s & persuaded Richard to come back & dine with me & Blanche & Edward also came. Henry came home early having dined at 5.30. Sudden death of old Dss of Cambridge.
