16 April 1889 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 16th [April 1889]. At 7 I had a little black coffee & brandy & at 8.30 Nurse called me in saying the Drs were all ready & I walked in in my dressing gown where I found a sheet over a sofa & 3 Drs waiting for me viz Dr Fuller, Mr Thos. Smith & the Dr who administered the æther who had a large black balloon in his hand. As soon as I had laid down to came up behind, covered my face & told me to breathe without struggling & after a choke I knew no more till 12 o’cl wh I woke very sick & found myself in bed– All was over & I had only to get well—& I was told it really had been a cyst & nothing more. Everybody was very kind, brought me flowers & came & sat with me—& as soon as I could go out Lady Lindsay (Blanche) lent me a bath chair & I was taken to Regents Park but I got on very slowly & suddenly after 3 weeks I got a threatening of erysipelas in the wound & had to keep my bed again—but I was very happy with my nurse & the kindness of everyone. On                Henry had Stella & Mrs Dyer to dinner & we had a party in the evening at wh I made my appearance but did not dine down. Stella played the violin quite beautifully. I had to part with my charming Nurse (Mellett) on Monday 27th May and was very sorry to lose her not but the maid I have got (Orr) was most attentive & on Friday, May 31st we drove down to Richmond Park by Sheen & to Ham Gate to the charming house lent us by Blanche Lady Lindsay. She was there to greet us & introduce us to Park Gate House & she returned to town before dinner. Henry & I had taken Ola Du Cane with us & our cook & Emilio & Orr. We were very happy there. We sat out on the lawn all day long. The weather was lovely, quite hot & there were very fine trees to sit under. On Sunday 2nd June Richard Du Cane & Virginia & a twin came down to lunch & Henry went with them to Pembroke Lodge to see Lady Russell on Monday. Henry, Ola & I drove over to Wimbledon to see the Murrays & every day we took long drives in the neighbourhood. On Thursday, 6th June we had a terrific thunderstorm about dinner time– The lightening was most vivid & the rain drops very large but it still continued to be very hot. on Friday, 7th June Henry, Ola & I drove up to Waterloo station & he & I left by 2.15 train for Motcombe. My brother Arthur joined us & went by the same train to Weymouth. We reached Motcombe about 6 to stay with Lady Westr, Merthyr & Theo. No one else was there.
