25 August 1889 — La Punta, Longarone
Sunday. 25th [August 1889]. The river still falling & the excitement over– All day yesterday presented a curious scene– Half the population was down by the torrent catching stray wood & raking out the small pieces to carry away, The men loading the women’s baskets wh they carried off on their shoulders. Today half the people of Longarone came down to see where the iron bridge had been– It is a great loss to the communes of Castellavazzo & the other villages. I hunted flowers with Nela in the morning. Read aloud to Henry. Took a drive up the valley towards Perarolo.
