24 August 1889 — La Punta, Longarone
Saturday. 24th August [1889]. As it was impossible to sleep at 6 we got up & opened our shutters. It was still raining & we found the waters considerably risen & masses of logs coming down wh owing to the height of the waters were doing a great deal of mischief & some of it was swept over the works into the main stream– All wh was occasioned by the works having been stopped for making the foundations of the iron bridge. Abt 7 the waters still increasing the scaffolding of wood whereupon the iron bridge rested began to give way & fears were entertained for the iron bridge—sure eno’ there was a great crash & away went the woodwork & down went the iron bridge after it & sank in pieces right across the bed of the torrent. Luckily the rain soon ceased & the river rose no more but began to fall– I dressed hastily & we watched all the morning what was going on. In the afternoon I went out to see the logs being moved down out of mischief, but nothing was to be done about the bridge. Read aloud a great deal to Henry. Abt 7.30 Mr Malcolm, Dacre, Ola & Nela returned from their trip which had been spoilt by the wet.
