31 August 1889 — Milan
Saturday. 31st [August 1889]. Henry & I left Milan by 10 o’cl train. Dacre came to the station with us & we parted with him. He leaves here tonight to return direct to Paris. We reached Turin abt 2, lunched there & went on by 3.15 train to Torre Pellice where we arrived about 6. Very full train. All the houses in the vicinity were decorated with flags as there is a great fete to celebrate the bicentenary of the “Glorieuse Rentrée” of the Vaudois to their own country in 1689. We found a room at the Hotel de l’Ours very clean & plain. Henry sent word to M. Meille of his arrival & after dinner he came & arranged that Henry should go to Bobi tomorrow morning. The Vaudois parson of Venice offers to give Henry a place in his carriage & they will have to start at 6 tomorrow morning. Very civil people. They speak both French & Italian. The place is at the base of lovely hills covered with vines & trees—& there are some nice houses about—all the very smallest covered with flags.
