4 October 1889 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana | |
Friday. 4th [October 1889]. We left & went on to Florence arriving abt 5 went to the Gran Bretagne where we had ordered rooms & on arriving & looking out of the window we heard shouts & found there was a man drowning in the Arno just before our eyes. We saw him go down twice & then a man caught & pulled him into a boat. He appeared to us dead but we heard afterwards that he was revived & the porter of our hotel spoke very indignantly of him saying “molti lo fanno per speculazione”! | |
