15 October 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 15th October [1889]. Lovely weather– Letter to say Morelli & Mme Minghetti will arrive to stay with us tomorrow. Prepared for them. At 1 set off with Henry & Ola to go to lunch on board the R.Y. “Osborne.” Met there Ct & Css Palfry a bride & bridegroom, Captain Holford who is to accompany Prince Eddie to India, Capt Bourke commander of “Surprise.” Had lunch in the saloon on deck—& were entertained by the Nani’s company of singers singing the old songs we hear every night on the Canal in summer. Nani’s little daughter of 10 was brought on board to play the mandolin accompanied by her father’s guitar. She played very well– After lunch Css Palfry sang to Nani’s accompaniment—a lovely fresh voice—& Capt Bourke sang Irish songs to the piano. Capt Lambton showed us his cabin & I saw my old quarters—a beautiful cabin I had occupied when we made our first journey to Consple on this ship. It was past 4 when we left. We went to the R.Y. Chazalie to call on M. & Mme de Falbe but did not find them & on getting home found they had been to us & left us a message to lunch with them at 12 tomorrow. I went a moment to see Css Pisani who had just arrived in town having come in answer to a telegram from me asking her to dine tonight. Went home, had tea & read aloud to Henry, Css Pisani, Lord Suffield, Mrs Eden, Capt Holford & Capt Lambton dined with us & then the gentlemen went off to meet the P. & Pss of Wales who were to arrive at 10.40. Henry & I followed them quickly in gondola & arrived just as the Royal party were coming out of the station the train having come in 20 minutes before the time announced. We were thus just able to see & shake hands with them & as soon as they had got into the steam launch & gone off to the Osborne we returned home to bed.
