17 October 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 17th October [1889]. Up at 7 writing notes &c– Sent to Mrs Eden for some flowers & busy morning arranging them & the rooms. The girls went off in the sandolo to see the “Osborne” in the morning. The Royal party arrived at abt 2 & we got lunch as soon as possible after– The P. & Pss of Wales, P. Victor, Prince George, Pss Victoria & Pss Maud, Miss Knowles, Col Clarke, Genl Ellis, Capt Holford, Sr Morelli, Countess Pisani & Mme Minghetti made up our party. The Princess was charming & very lively & looked beautiful & we were very merry. Annie distinguished herself & we had an excellent lunch. Afterwards coffee & cigarettes in the Drawing Room. Mrs Eden & Miss Hammersley were there with our 3 girls who had had to dine upstairs. Abt 4 Henry took off the whole royal party to see the Glass blowing at Murano & I went upstairs to lie down & rest. Henry returned at 5 having also accompanied HRH to the Cemetery to find his cousin’s grave & Henry says he was very much annoyed to find the dirty state the old Protestant burying ground was kept in & he had great difficulty in finding the grave. The authorities had wished to remove it to the new Protestant burying ground but had found it impossible as the Empress Frederick had given our Queen the advice not to let them do so—& the authorities therefore have allowed the old ground to be used for materials & tools. We had Countess Pisani, Mr & Mrs Story, Capt Bourke to dinner. Afterwards there was a galleggiante & some houses were illuminated. Henry took the girls out to see it & I went to bed—but they were soon driven home by the rain wh set in about 11 & stopped the whole thing. We had a letter this morning from Count Seckendorff to say the Empress wd be here on Sunday at 3 o’cl.
