18 October 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 18th October [1889]. Rainy morning. Henry took out Morelli, Mme Minghetti & Ola to see the Giovanelli Palace & the Giorgnie there. I superintended Nela’s painting till lunch time. It cleared in the afternoon & Henry, Morelli, Mme Minghetti & I went out in gondola to Rietti’s shop & to call on Css Pisani & to write our names at the Osborne. We found the Css Pisani had prepared in case the Wales should go to tea with her but they could not do so, she therefore gave us tea out of the fine old Dresden tea set given by the King of Saxony to a Pisani ancestor which she had prepared for the P & Pss of Wales—& we then came home. We dined at 7 & then went to the Goldoni theatre to see Zago & where the Prince of Wales was expected. The theatre was crammed & when he & his 2 sons arrived the band played God save the Queen & they were loudly cheered. Genl Ellis came into my box with Mme M & Morelli. Ola in another with Css Pisani & Nela & Eda with Henry. The Prince of Wales came to visit us between the acts & stayed some time but left the theatre early & we took leave of him as he sails for Corfu tomorrow early.
