22 October 1889 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 22nd October [1889]. “The Imperatrix” left this morning early & we returned to quiet but the weather was still bad & it rained off & on during the day– I gave Nela a lesson in painting in the morning. Mr Malcolm came over to settle about the linen I am ordering from Monza & we made the list together. After lunch Css Pisani called & took Donna Laura & me in her gondola to Clerle’s to look for stuff for Da Laura. There she left us & Da Laura & I went to the Piazza to meet Henry & Morelli but somehow we missed them & after wandering about sometime we met & went on to S. Zaccaria to see the Bellini picture in the sacristy. We had some difficulty in finding the [illegible word] & when he came it was so dark that we could hardly see it & it came on to rain & blow & we hastened away. They left me at Css Pisani’s & I accompanied her to Rietti’s to look for a table wh she did not find & then to H. Britannia to call on P. & Princess Sapich– She Css Pisani returned home & I called on Css Canevaro & Mlle Cozzi & got home late. Mr Brown dined with us & we had music in the evening singing chorus aided by Mme Minghetti– She also sang serious songs very beautifully & has still a splendid voice altho’ she must be near upon 60.
