3 April 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 3rd April [1890]. Mr Burton came to see Henry at 10.30 & says the pain in the face is caused by an abscess on the gum—but pronounces the lungs sound—& only the heart a little irregular. Put him on a regime & prescribed for him. At 11 I was just starting to go to see Mr Smith the surgeon when I met Maria at the door & she offered to accompany me—& we walked to Stratford Place. Mr Smith expected me & was very kind– After examining the lump on my breast he asked if I would allow him to tap it to see if it was solid or only water—on my assenting he called in Maria & got a little syringe & drove in a needle but with the result that he only extracted 2 or 3 drops of water– He told me he wished me to try to absorb but he frankly confessed he did not believe it wd be of any avail & said he would get me Nurse Mellett for the operation in a fortnight’s time– So we left him & called on Blanche & told her & then I went home– Ola came from 25 Park Crescent to take up her abode with us for a time. Nellie Alderson who is staying at 3 Savile Row came to dinner–
