23 May 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Friday. 23rd May [1890]. Got up by 10.30 & had Signor Smargiassi to see me about a project for forming a training school for fan painting & we discussed it at length & I decided to refer it to Mama– Then he told me what trouble he had had to get on in London. He had brought only one letter & that to Lady Sykes & she had taken no notice of him & consequently he had no friends. He is a gentleman & used to lead the cottilion at our balls at Venice & he turned artist & fan painter and finding that did not pay he took to “black & white” that is working for illustrated papers & is now gaining a livelihood. I promised to do what I could to help him to make some friends & to let him know what was decided about the fan painting. Mr Vigor happening to call abt painting a portrait of Fred for Henry I introduced them to each other. Henry lunched at 1 & went to a meeting of the Nat. Gallery. Ola, Fred & I lunched at 2 & Ola went off to Eastbourne with the twins & her father for their holidays. Nela coming in at that moment I took her for a drive with me. Fred took leave of us & returned home to his wife the house being ready to receive him. I went to try & buy a hat but was not successful in 2 or 3 shops. Went to Lady Lindsay’s to an Exhibition held by her daughter of embroideries done by girls whom she teaches– Then came home to tea with Henry & rested in my room. I dined with Blanche, Edward & Mama & propounded the fan scheme to the latter. Henry dined with the Rates & fetched me home. Blanche is pleased with the result of her Irish work sales wh amounts to near £70.
