24 May 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 24th May [1890]. A very warm day. Went out driving at 1 o’cl, fetched Blanche at No 17 & we went again on a fruitless quest of hats & then for ¼ hour to walk in the Park where we met Lord St Germans & took a turn with him. There was nobody riding as it was too hot. Back to luncheon at 2. Sir F. Burton came in to consult Henry– He had just received a note from Goschen to say the Govt wd give £25000 towards the buying of the 3 Radnor pictures for the Nat. Gallery provided the rest of the sum can be collected by the city people as they propose. Poor Sir F. was in a fuss & wanted advice as to what was to be done &c. Henry said that there was simply nothing to be done at wh Sir F. said he must hasten off to try & find Sir Wm Gregory & ask his advice! Henry & I left at 3.30 for Victoria Station to go down to Milton Court. Mrs Rate was there & we went with her– There were crowds & a great confusion at the station, so many people were going off for the Whitsun Holidays. We got down to Dorking a little behind time. Stopped in the little town & bought a common hat for me to trim wh I did after dinner. Found Mr Rate, Ida & Enid on the lawn & sat there & had tea. Dined at 8 & went early to bed. Mr Chichester the Dorking Vicar came to call & brought a nice old gentleman named Joyce—the son of a former vicar. He was interested to see this house wh was inhabited by collagers when he was a boy. Our host Mr Rate bought the house from Mr Evelyn of Watton. It was the Evelyn Dower house & a lovely old Elizabethian red brick building originally of the form of an E. until Mr Rate added wings– it is covered with ivy & has a lovely old fashioned garden.
