25 May 1890 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Sunday. 25th May [1890]. I breakfasted in bed but got up for church & Mrs Rate took me in the brougham to Dorking parish church where an attempt at High Churchism was displayed in the procession of the white robed choir & clergy with wh the service began. They issued from the vestry preceded by a boy carrying a banner on wh was a cross embroidered & they sang the hymn “Onward Christian soldiers” as they marched slowly down the side aisle & up the centre one to their places in the chancel. This is their way of celebrating Whitsunday but it revolted me & stirred all the Huguenot blood within me. The service was lone & all musical—not good music—the service indifferent. Read a good deal in afternoon– Had a late dinner.
