31 May 1890 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Saturday. 31st May [1890]. We left Milton by 11.17 train & got [to] town at 12.20. I took the birds with me in a muff box. They were all strong & hearty. Ola was delighted with them when she saw them. I did not go out again. Maria came to see me. She was in town a couple of hours & does not return till Monday to settle. Lady Galway called & came in to the library & I gave her tea. She was looking ill. I had a letter from Lady Bagot today from our house at Venice where she is staying telling me that the Canevaros dear boy Dicky has died of scarlet fever at the Naval College of Leghorn. I am terribly distressed for them– Poor Ersilia will be broken hearted & I tremble for her reason. Ruth Du Cane came to tea & stayed dinner with Henry & Ola. I went to bed being very tired & headachy, before dinner.
