1 July 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 1st July [1890]. My birthday. I got up late. Katie Colnaghi came to luncheon & we expected Sigr Smargiassi & he did not come till 3 when he appeared in a great state of mind. He said he had received a telegram from me last night putting him off– He showed me a telegram signed “Layard” which puzzled him till I guessed it was from Henry’s nephew Arthur. Smargiassi said he had happened to see Henry driving in the carriage & so concluded that we had not left town as the telegram said. I told him it did not a bit matter & we laughed over the mistake. Merthyr came up to town to stay with us a couple of nights. Mrs Rate came to see me as she leaves town in 2 days. Was surprised by a visit from Mme Hurtado & Idita Bentivoglio. The former has just come from America & Idita has come to meet her. Mama, Maria, my brother Arthur & the Ponsonby family & the Du Canes came to tea with me to keep my birthday. I dined in my room & went to bed very tired. Henry dined with Lady Galway & Ola joined him there in the evening.
