5 August 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 5th [August 1890]. Henry going on well. I got up at 7.30 & breakfasted at 8 in his room. Dressed myself & helped him to wash for the Dr who came abt 11. Edgar came to ask abt Henry. Had a visit also from Katie Bagot. Mrs Ball came at 12 & sat with me a little. She is in a calmer state of mind & is getting a little better. Fred: came to lunch & went off directly afterwards. I dressed early & gave Henry his dinner at 7. (I had gone out driving in afternoon.) Sir Henry Thompson came while Henry was having his dinner & then he & I & Ola dined at 7.30. Sir Henry & I went to the Lyceum to see the American troupe in “The Great Unknown” most amusing, a Miss Rehan acted very well tho’ somewhat too old for the part of a girl of 18 wh she has to play– She was very much applauded– After the piece Sir Henry took me behind the scenes to introduce me to Miss Rehan. Her black servant was waiting for us at the stage door & took us upstairs to Miss Rehan’s dressing room– She had taken off her blonde wig but was still in the costume she had acted in. She is a tall large made woman of abt 30—handsome—fair complexion & large dark eyes & dark hair. She was very pleasant. Other visitors came to see her but she took them to another room & then returned to us. She said she was worn out & ill & had been to see a Dr whose medicine did not agree with her. Sir Henry kindly offered to take her in hand. We asked her if she was pleased with her audience. She said “oh but yes it was lovely!” She seems very warm hearted & impulsive & quite a lady. While I was taking leave of her she held my hand in both of hers in a close large friendly grasp—& begged me to come & see her after the play any time I might be going there. Henry was asleep when I got home & I took his lamp out of his room & did not wake him. It was just 12 when I got into bed.
