6 August 1890 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 6th August [1890]. With Henry till 12 o’cl & then walked to Buckland’s Hotel to see Mary Turner & hear about Aunt Mary’s illness—she seems to be very ill & not likely to recover. Home to lunch at 2. Gave Henry his lunch abt 1.30. Sir Henry Thompson came to visit him at 3 with Mr Herring. Mr H. comes every day at 10.30—3—& 10.30 at night. Sir Wm Gregory came to see Henry & sat with him. Henry got out of bed at 4 & sat on the easy chair for a couple of hours. Signor Smargiassi came to show me how to paint fans but we had no silk ready so he promised to return next week. I did not go out driving but sent the carriage to the Du Canes to use. Sent Rina, Mary & Paolo to see Windsor Castle—when they returned in the eveng they said it was the only day in the week the Castle was closed to the public. Edward came to see me & asked me to dine with them tonight as Blanche returned from Canford. I went to 2 Cavendish Square to see the Dss Sermoneta. She was on a sofa in her room—& her confinement seemed imminent. Old Susan Hepburn came to see me & helped me to dress for dinner & walked round to Cav. Sqr with me. Huntly was also dining there & Mr Burton. I came home directly after dinner & played patience in Henry’s room till Mr Herring came to settle him for the night.
