5 September 1890 — Milan
Friday. 5th [September 1890]. Breakfasted at 8 in our room. Went shopping with Rina & walked. Bought an invalid’s table—& looked at a long bath &c. Back to Hotel & finished Dr Jekyll to Henry. Lunch at ¼ to 12—& then went to the station. Had a compartment to ourselves. Train supposed to leave at 12.50—left past 1—& we got in to Venice ½ hour late. Had an excitement on the road. Saw a man with his head bleeding & did not quite make out how it happened– Then later the train was suddenly stopped & there was a putting of heads out of the windows. It was finally found that a dog or a calf had got on the line & been killed by our train– Mr Malcolm met us at Venice & Dacre & Virgie, May & Ola & Nela having come down today from Longarone where they have been staying with Mr Malcolm. We dined at 7.30 & Henry & I went early to bed. The Du Canes went out in gondola. For the first time since Henry’s illness did not get up at 6 to make him some tea.
