4 September 1890 — Baveno
Thursday. 4th September [1890]. We left Baveno by 11.20 steamer. A lovely day, fine & cool. Had just time at Arona to get the train. There were 2 very nice Italians in the carriage & later on 2 sort of 2nd class people got in. The woman in a brown satin with the pretty black lace veil. The man a vulgar fidgetty little creature with red hair. We reached Milan at 3.35. Went to Hotel Cavour. Had a cup of tea & then out with Rina to see Mlle Couzi. Found Senatore Morelli with Henry on my return. He has been very ill with a return of influenza like Henry & they compared notes. We dined at 7.30 & Morelli came again in the evening for an hour. I read Henry the story of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, a book which has been much talked about but we thought it stupid.
