7 September 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 7th September [1890]. Dacre & his sisters went off to Vicenza to see the Ria by the 9 oclock train & returned by 6.35. We believed that there was no service at our church so I remained at home. It was rather warm & scirocco & I sat in my bedroom with closed shutters reading & playing guitar & Henry came here also for an hour before lunch. Mr Malcolm lunched with us. We sat in my room & had tea there & at 4 Henry & I went out in gondola to the Eden’s garden & took a walk there. Just as we were ready for dinner & the girls had arrived Ct Seckendorff & the ADC came to call & said that if we should be at home in the evening the Princesses would like to come over. Malcolm dined with us & abt 9 the Empress, the 2 Princesses & Count Seckendorff came. Seeing Nani’s boat of singers go by Pss Victoria asked us to stop them & they came & sang under the windows till abt 10.30 when the royal party returned home & we to bed. Talked to our 2nd gondolier Nani about the death of his dear old father Luigi our head gondolier who died a victim to this terrible influenza about a month ago. We shall never see his like again. He was a fine tall erect old man, wore earrings in the old style & was very intelligent & devoted to the family he served.
