18 September 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 18th September [1890]. Up at 7.30– Painted till 12. Practised guitar. Mrs Eden came to see me & sat in my room. We had much to hear & to tell– We were very much interested to hear all abt the disasters at Zoldo. Mr Eden had been carried 3 hours over the mountains to get from Forno to Lower Zoldo & 2 hours the next day. She said they thought that the disaster was caused by a water spout & earthquake– There had been hardly any wind but incessant thunder & lightening & all over in one hour. The bed of the Mis had risen 5 metres in some places & deep ravines scored in every direction. One house in Dort was carried away like a flash of lightening by the water which had got dammed up for a few minutes & 17 people perished. Carry stayed luncheon with us—& went home abt 3. The Princesses sent over for the girls to go to the Lido with them. Henry & I went out in gondola, left some cards & on to the Eden’s garden—had tea & walked abt with Carry getting flowers. Lady Elizabeth & Miss Adeane, Mr Peter & Mr Mallet came just as we went home. Put up flowers & read aloud to Henry till dinner at 7.30. Mr Frank Leo Schuster came to dinner & brought Mr Goring Thomas the composer of “Esmerelda”, Mr Phillips the art critic. After dinner Lady Elizabeth & Miss Adeane came & we had some music. Mr Schuster banged some Grieg on our new piano & then Pss Victoria & Margaret came over & Pss Vic. sang with Miss Adeane & then Mr G. Thomas played some of his own music most delightfully—& Miss Adeane tried to sing some of the Esmerelda to his accompaniment. It was nearly 12 when we separated & went our various ways.
