3 October 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 3rd October [1890]. Directly after breakfast I went over to the Emp. to take her orders & then returned & sent off Ola to go out with her. I went & sat with Mama in her bed room. Abt 12 the Emp: came here with Ola to see Mama & went into her bedroom & sat with her. Css Pisani came to see us while we were still at luncheon. Directly after Ct Seckendorff came over to consult me about paying the servants &c &c. At 2.30 I went over with the girls (4) to fetch the Psses & took them to the steps of the giardinetto where the admiral’s sailing boat was waiting & we went out to sea sailing. There was very little wind & that little soon died away so that we had to row back to S. Nicoletto where we landed. Ola went with the Emp. & the steam launch fetched them & brought them to meet us– We made tea & then walked to S. Elizabetta by the lanes. I talked a great deal about royal marriages with H.M. & she said that she hoped Pss Victoria would be happy—that it was very hard upon people in their position to have their marriages always made up. As the Emp: William had sworn that his sister shd marry none but a german & as she could no longer marry the man she loved (Alexander Battenberg) there was nothing to be done but take P. Adolf who was good & amiable. She said there was one Englishman she would have married—she could not tell us his name but those sort of marriages did not do. Pss Victoria was good & well principled & we must hope for the best. We had a most splendid sunset—Venice stood in a sea of fire– It was a lovely evening. We got home abt 7 & I had just time to dress for dinner. In the evening we had the Trios—Trombini, Agostini & Stella. The Empress came over at 9 & stayed till abt 10.30. Stella played beautifully– The Princesses stayed on till later. We asked the Brownings, Curtis, Storys, Noces &c.
