4 October 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 4th October [1890]. This being the Empress’ last day at Venice I gave up the whole day to her & went to her at 10– We went to the Sailors Institute where we were met by Mr Jameson—& the Revd Alexander & Mrs Robertson the Scotch Minister who had been at S. Remo when H.M. was there. He begged her to go to see Mrs Hammonds asilo & she consenting we went to the Canareggio & were shown into a nicely kept house where there were 60 boys in school. We saw their dormitory—their carving shop—printing room & shoe making– The Institution is kept up by subscriptions from England & the children are taught Protestantism wh is a reason we have generally avoided any connections with the school but I must confess it is admirably arranged & probably does a great deal of good by good education. We went from there to the Palazzo Rezzonico where Mr & Mrs Browning received H.M. & showed her over the house. Mr & Mrs Val Prinsep are staying with the Brownings & went over the house with us & their 2 little boys– On leaving here it was past 12 & H.M. said there was only one more place she wished to see & that was the Curtis Apartment in Palazzo Barbaro so we went there and sent up word to ask if the Padroni were in Mrs Curtis & her son were there so we went up. While we were waiting at the door a gentleman bowed out of a gondola a little way off & we concluded it was the Bishop of Ely & Lady Alwyne Compton so while H.M. was looking over the house I wrote a note to Lady A to say they were invited to Palazzo Malcolm this evening. We had to hurry to be home to our respective luncheons at 1. At 2 I went over to join the Empress & took her to the hospital of St Giov: & Paolo where Dr Cini was waiting for her & he showed her over the building which is splendid & beautifully kept & has very fine ceilings. After that we went to the Ponte Lungo for H.M. to finish her sketch. The Princesses & our girls went out in the torpedo boat with Adl & Mme Noce & Mr Moore. The steam launch fetched H.M. & me & took us to join them & we went to S. Elisabetta on the Lido & asked the permission of a gentleman there to go into his garden & there made & had our tea– We walked across the Lido that H.M. might have a last look of the sea & then had to hurry home. H.M. & the 2 Princesses were towed in their gondola & the Noces in theirs & the latter were dropped at the Arsenal & the former at Princess Hatzfeldt’s house– The rest of us came in the steam launch very sad at thinking this was our last outing– We dined & then went over to Pal: Malcolm– Css Pisani & the Noces, Prefet, Barnozzi &c had been dining there—& the Edens, Alwyne Comptons &c &c came there also. We left early as the Empress was tired & they have to be up early tomorrow as they start at 9.
