5 October 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 5th October [1890]. Got up at 7, had tea & dressed & started for the station abt 8.15 to see the Royal party off– H.M. had begged no one would go to the station but we insisted. There were many besides us, Css Pisani, the Brownings, Bss Vietinghoff, the consuls & high Italian authorities. The Princesses were almost in tears & we all felt gulpy. When the Empress kissed me she said “Good bye, dear Lady Layard, you know that I love you.” As she stood in the door way of her carriage she called me & said think of me on 18th—my dear husband’s birthday.” The train carried them off at 9.50 & we returned to our breakfast. Mr Malcolm & Css Pisani came to breakfast with us. At 10.30 we had all to be off to church. Miss Scriven played the harmonium & I led the singing. The Bishop of Ely preached. Bad delivery– After service Henry & I went to Hotel Britannia to see the Dyers’ & Mr Dyer’s picture of a street in Cairo—which is very clever—then home to luncheon. Went to afternoon service at 3.30 & afterwards to the Eden’s garden. The Noces were there & brought me back—& left me at Css Pisanis & I went & had a long talk with her & hired a gondola to bring me home at 7. She leaves town tomorrow morning.
