24 October 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 24th October [1890]. Henry, Ruth & I left by 8.35 train for Vescovana. At the station we met the Dyers who left at 9.5 for Milan. We arrived at St Elina soon after 10 & reached Vescovana abt 11. Breakfasted & sat talking till abt 3 when we went for a drive—I with the Css in her brougham—to the Palazzo Rossa—a farm built on the actual banks of the Adige at the end of last century for a Pisani who was delicate & it was supposed if he lived in a farm & on the Adige it would be good for him. He died before the house was finished & it was never inhabited. Now the Css has taken the farm into her own hands & is going to finish the house. She showed me over it—there are nice rooms but the wood is rotten & there is a good deal to be done—but she wished me to see its present state & then to compare it when it is arranged. She talked much of her affairs & told me when her husband died there was no money & she had had to borrow money at interest to pay the taxes; by degrees she took things into her own hands & now she was well off. Home to tea– Dined at 7.30. Played guitar in evening. Henry played patience.
