2 December 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 2nd December [1890]. Passini came to tell Henry that he was waiting for finer weather to finish his portrait. He came into the studio & gave Nela & me hints about our painting. At 12 Ola & I practised guitar & mandola duetts. I had a letter from the Empress Frederick saying Princess Victoria & her sposo would soon be here & giving me commissions to execute. It was a dark day & wet so Sophy & I remained at home in afternoon, sat in my room. I wrote to the Empress & she read & we occasionally talked. Henry went out in gondola– Princess of Montenegro & her girl came to call—& stayed late. When I went up to close my letters I missed a paper I wanted to enclose to the Empress & searched high & low in vain for it– After looking everywhere my maid at last found it put away by mistake by her with some lace &c with which the paper had got mixed. I had no time to read to Henry in consequence.
