18 December 1890 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 18th [December 1890]. Bitter weather—more snow—dark & cold. Began to work at the costumes the girls are to wear for the masked procession on Christmas night. Mr Hervey came to luncheon & I took him & Nela out. We left Mr H. at the Piazza. I went to see Mme Hurtado & asked Idita if she would take the part of winter in the procession. She said she could not leave her mother. We went on to the Pss of Montenegro & asked Olga to be “Dame Mince Pie” wh she promised to do. Came home. It snowed off & on all day & was bitterly cold. After tea we went to work again on the costumes. I read aloud to Henry for a very short time. We always sit in my bedroom wh is warm. Mr Hervey & Mr Brown dined with us. Played Halma & Patience–
