3 January 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 3rd January [1891]. I received a letter from Sir Wm Gregory telling me how Henry’s friends had decided to place his bust in the Brit: Museum feeling it had too long been delayed. They had arranged with Boehm abt it the day before the sculptor’s death—& the money had been promptly subscribed amongst Henry’s many intimate friends. He said he knew Henry would grumble so they had not told us before. Of course he did grumble & said it was a thing got up in the family &c but I think he is touched as I am. Passini worked all the morng. I got up by 11 & sat there talking. It was a splendid day tho’ cold. Ola went to the church practise—& we took Nela to her & then Henry & I went for a long row—by St Giov: & Paolo nearly to Murano & back by the Canareggio home. There was a great deal of cat’s ice floating about—but the distant mountains were beautiful thro’ the haze & their snowy tops became quite pink towards sun set. As we got round to the entrance of the Canareggio the sun dipped behind the railway bridge like an immense ball of fire. Got home abt ¼ to 5. Had tea, copied music & blew up the girls for coming home after dark. Read aloud to Henry. Mlle Pickwick took Ola & Nela to Rossini to hear Forza del Destino. We played patience & went early to bed.
