4 January 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 4th January [1891]. Splendid day again. Got up after breakfast. Wrote to Sir Wm Gregory. Girls went to church. Afternoon Henry walked with Nela & I went in gondola & fetched them home at the Riva Schiavoni. The weather looked like changing. Mr & Mrs Curtis came to tea—also Css Giulia Persico. I practised guitar a bit & then read aloud to Henry till dinner. I received a letter today from one Sydney Canning whom I had seen 19 years ago when his mother a French music teacher died at Madrid & left 3 orphan children. We took the 2 boys & girl in & sent them on to England to our R.C. relatives the Hutchins. They sent the boys to Stonyhurst & they are now both Jesuit priests– The elder one writes to thank me & to ask if I can give any information abt his father’s family wh I cannot. He was dead before we went to Madrid. I had a long letter from Lady Gregory abt politics & other chit chat. She tells how that old bore Sir G. Bowen had announced that he was starting to see the Govr of Gib: the Consul at Tangiers & the Ambr at Madrid & then had to confess all 3 had put him off on some trivial excuse!
