5 January 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 5th January [1891]. Nela & I painted. At 11.50 Ola & I had a lesson of Trombini for our guitar & mandola duetts. It was a bitter cold day & snowed a little. Send the gondola to poor old Css Thun’s funeral. It is the custom here to send one gondola & the gondolier goes to the ceremony with a large lighted torch. One gets the candle at the shop & returns it merely paying for the wax burnt away. Practised for the guitar band after lunch till tea time. Read aloud Tartarin sur les Alpes to Henry till dinner. Played guitar & mandola duetts with Ola & the harmonium also. Bed early. Henry complains of little feverishness.
