24 January 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 24th [January 1891]. Lovely weather & not so cold but not a thaw. Went out with Henry to our church to meet Mr Browning & see the new heating apparatus which seems a great success. Henry went to walk on the Piazzetta. I went to call on Ersilia Canevaro & found her in a calmer state & a little getting over her grief. Several ladies were there & the great topic was Mr Nevile having become quite mad & his wife Css Persico will not let him be removed from the house– Mr Woods came to tea & Sr Trevisanato. Nela returned from Vescovana. The Css sent her to Padua & we sent Regina the maid for her. We dined at 7.30 & went to the Fenice the 1st night of the “Cavalleria Rusticana” a new little opera by Mascagni wh has had great success. The author is very young & poor. He cd not afford to have a piano & used to go to the church organ to try his compositions. The music is pretty & one interlude with organ accompaniment very fine. It was encored. The opera is only in one set– The tenor sang very badly—the women pretty well & acted very well. The whole thing is dramatic. The house was very full– The orchestra played a piece of Bizet first to spin out the time– I did not much care for it– I was his “Arlesienne.” We were home by 11. Yesterday Baroness Andrian appeared at my tea time, she said she had thoughts of settling here– I enquired after her husband but have since been told that she is separated from him– She is so queer that as soon as the daughter Gabrielle married he said he could stand her no more. Ct Charles Zaboronsky also called—a tall Pole to whom Henry had given letters of introduction when he made a tour in India.
