14 April 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 14th [April 1891]. Wrote a lot of letters & got up about 3. Made cotillion bows—& superintended arrangements for this evening’s dance. Ida Belmondo came to lunch & then went away & returned to tea & helped us to tie parcels &c for the cotillion & the Bents came also to make final arrangements– We dined at 7 & dressed by 9.30 when all was ready & the candles lighted & abt 10 people began to arrive & by ¼ past they took their places & the cotillion began– It was lead by Marchese Bentivoglio & Count Bon who danced with Ola & Nela– I had only invited girls & their chaperones & all the men I could think of. It was very amusing & the young people danced with great spirit. At 12 they stopped dancing & supped– As the dining room was not large eno for all to be seated we had another room prepared at the end of the ball room—with 2 tables & there I presided, Henry presiding in the dining room. They were chiefly the young people in my room & they were very merry & gave the “If If” as they called it. Fortunately Guy Hammersley was there to direct the Hip Hip Hurray wh they gave heartily. After supper the dance recommenced—& the cotillion was finished at abt 2.30. Henry had gone off to bed after supper. There were small presents distributed in the cotillion—& lots of flowers & Mrs Eden sent us some Japanese fans with branches of fruit blossoms tied on to them wh were lovely & excited great admiration. Mr Eden came to the dance & was very lively & well.
