2 May 1891 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 2nd May [1891]. Kate came to stay with us & brought her boy Henry & Sir Wm Dalby came & performed an operation in his throat & cut out a growth at the back of his nose which made him deaf & prevented his breathing properly. We were both very nervous—but it was a small thing & soon over– Mr Blaine came & administered ether—they turned us out of the room & only allowed Mary the housemaid to stay. The poor boy felt nothing & was not even obliged to go to bed. He remained on the sofa & was kept quiet. Nellie came & dined with us & she & I went to see “L’Enfant Prodigue” a piece given by a French company all in pantomime—not a word spoken. It is quite wonderfully done– Especially the father & mother part. The father & the prodigal son are dressed as Pierrots and have their faces whitened. The music which accompanies the whole piece is very cleverly managed. Henry went to dine at the Academy dinner so had the carriage so Nelly & I came back in a cab. We got a very bad horse & I was so alarmed that at Savile Row we dismissed the cab & took another for me to go home–
