18 May 1891 — Paris
Monday. 18th May [1891]. We had a letter from Mrs Fred Layard wh seemed unsatisfactory. So I wrote to Arthur to beg him to let us have a letter to say how Frederic is. Henry & I went with Edward to the Salon & spent a long morning there. It was disappointing– Rather worse than our Academy. Bonnat’s Samson was not fine—& his portrait of a lady black in the flesh tints– The still life pictures impressed us most. There is a colossal picture of the Fall of Babylon by Rochegrosse. The palace is Nineveh Henry says—not Babylonian—& well studied—the figures too Zola-ish the women disgustingly unclothed– We returned to the Hotel to luncheon. Took a walk with Blanche & did a little shopping. We all 4 dined with Mr & Mrs Dyer & met Mme Adam & Mme Serre also Mr Austin Lee & Mr Perugini an American singer né Chatterton– Mme Adam is a good looking pleasant woman. Henry sat next her at dinner & they made great friends & after dinner she expressed her delight in him & said she found him so like a Frenchman so light in hand & unlike an Englishman. In the evening a few more people came by viz Mrs Crawford (a newspaper woman as Mrs Reid called her) & Mr & Mrs Whitelaw Reid the American Minister & his wife very nice people. Stella played 3 pieces on the violin one being Sarasate’s Habanera. Mr Perugini sang & a Mr Fordyce an actor recited some French pieces very cleverly & amusingly. It was 1 o’cl by the time we went home to bed.
