31 July 1891 — Motcombe House, nr. Shaftesbury, Dorset
Friday. 31st July [1891]. Mr Collins left for his home in Cornwall after breakfast. I set to work & wrote a lot of letters wh took me all the morning. After lunch I tried my hand at flower painting in oils & made a feeble attempt to paint a sing. poppy. Then I went out in the garden to walk with Henry & we found Merthyr in the shrubbery grubbing up old roots of trees, rather hard work which he gives himself to do when he cannot get much exercise. Theo & Henry stayed some time & then went off leaving me to watch Merthyr. Suddenly we heard a crack & Merthyr had time to say “there goes a tree”—when there came a crash like thunder. I ran toward the house to see what it was & found a large branch had fallen from an old elm near the stables. Lucky the coachman’s children had gone out for the day to a volunteer review at Sherborne or they would probably have been playing under the tree. Our servants were taken to the Review by the house servants & only came back late in the evening. We dined at 8 & I played Halma with Theo. Henry played cribbage with Merthyr.
