8 August 1891 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 8th August [1891]. I packed & went out shopping & then to see Mama & there met Henry. Merthyr came home to luncheon & then left for Motcombe by 2.40 train. Mama left for Peterboro to stay with Kate. We left by 4 o’clock train from Victoria for Dorking to stay with Mrs Rate. A Mr & Mrs Fane came down by the same train. Found Mr Hoare Ida Rate’s sposo & a Mr Anstruther staying there. Mr Rate is still away at Marienbad. Tea in the garden & took a walk round before dinner. Enid Rate sang & played very nicely & Mrs Fane sang moderately well. Enid was ridiculously affected & had done her hair in a tremendous mass at the back of her head—threw her eyes about & shook her shoulders—lisped & altogether was very second rate in her manners—& made eyes at the men—but she seems to attract them wonderfully & have them at her feet– It provokes me—& I am sorry to see my godchild turn out to be like that.
