14 August 1891 — Blackmoor, nr. Liss, Hampshire
Friday. 14th August [1891]. Wrote letters– Made cigarettes. Lunch at 1. Sophie drove me in her pony cart, Henry & Mr Waldegrave drove in the landeau & we went to call on Professor Tyndall. A lovely drive & fine day. When we got to the 2 men went at once to Tyndalls’– Sophie & I walked on to the Monument on the top of the hill where the gallows used to be & where we got a splendid view for some 60 miles in every direction. On the way we passed a stone erected to the memory of a poor sailor murdered by 3 men who were afterwards caught & hanged on the neighbouring gallows. We talked of the Tennysons & Sophie told me how Hallam had once wanted to marry her—also how she found he had wanted once proposed to Mary Gladstone & I told her that Barbara Lyall had told me he had proposed to her– We walked back to Tyndalls & found him on the sofa hardly recovered from a severe illness. He was most cordial & kind & delighted to see Henry. Mrs Tyndall received us very kindly. Her mother Lady Claude Hamilton was there—now almost blind—but with a very sad expression one could see traces of her past beauty. Tyndall kindly signed my book. We went on to call on Lady Russell & found her in & with her her sister Lady Elizabeth Romilly. We stayed a very short time & then set off home & arrived abt 7.30. Dined at 8. Whist & Halma.
