17 August 1891 — Foxbase, nr. Lyndhurst Road, Hampshire
Monday. 17th [August 1891]. Painted flowers. Gave Ruth guitar lesson. After lunch played tennis with the girls. At 3 went for a drive with Maria, Richard & Nela. We went to Lyndhurst church to see the fresco painted by Sir F. Leighton—the good & foolish virgins– It did not much please us—the comp: is not very good & the execution weak. The church is handsome. Drove on to the Forrest. Went to see Rufus’ stone. The spot on wh he is supposed to have been killed, thence on to Mark Ash where we saw the King & Q. oaks & by a long round thro’ splendid forrest scenery back to Lyndhurst & home. A most enjoyable drive. We got back at 5.30. Had tea & then resumed tennis. The coachman’s son a small boy of 8 nicely dressed in sailor costume brought his violin in to play to us. He being said to be an infant prodigy. He played resolutely & manfully thro 2 pieces not one note of wh were in time—nor even gave the faintest idea of the air. He asked to be accompanied by the piano & I tried but it was too excruciating & I told him the piano did not go with his violin at wh he remarked that “Mr Bull’s (his master) piano does.” We cannot understand it as Mr Bull praised him so much to Maria. We suppose he is totally without any ear– We thanked him & he departed in triumph. Dinner at 8—& I taught Richard Halma in evening.
