9 November 1891 — Villa Pisani, Vescovana
Monday. 9th November [1891]. With regret we left Vescovana & returned to Venice. We breakfasted with the Countess at 10.30 & left directly after to drive to St Elena to take the 12.25 express. We are all devoted to Countess Pisani & she has adopted me as her child & the Du Cane girls as grandchildren– Henry goes by the name of her “overfed brother in law.” She is full of fun & spirits—still very handsome & tho just turned 60 has not one grey hair! She administers her property better than most Italian men. Her factotum is the village priest Don Antonio who is quite a character & he helps her in managing her property– A tall man with a pretence of stupidity & a sly look– He really is eccentric & also rather learned. The Countess keeps him in good order. We got home soon after 2 & found our house put into winter trim—carpets down, shutters replaced by double windows & fires lit– I went to my room & remained there for the rest of the day not being quite well yet. Henry & the girls went out. After I read aloud to Henry & in the evening he played patience in my room while Ruth & I played Halma–
