11 November 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 11th [November 1891]. I was much better & got up for luncheon & sat in the studio. Mrs Eden came to see me & Idita Bentivoglio & Mme Hurtado & had tea with me upstairs. I dined down. Ida Bentivoglio came abt 6 & stayed to dinner. Mr Malcolm also dined with us. Just as we were going to bed Henry called out that there was a fire in the town. The girls went on the roof to look & not being able to see what it was we sent John out to enquire. He soon returned saying the Palazzo degli Ambasciatori was on fire. We had feared it was the Rezzonico but it was a little further on– The fire was evidently out by the time we got into bed—the sky was not so brilliantly lighted– This is the first time we have even seen a fire here—they are happily rare owing to the concrete floorings.
