13 November 1891 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 13th November [1891]. Breakfast in bed & got up late. The weather is warmer again—but foggy & scirocco. The girls rowed in the sandolo in afternoon. I went out in gondola with Henry. I dropped him at Guggenheim to do a commission for the Empress Frederick & went on to see Ida Bel. whom I found at home. I did not stay long. Henry fetched me & we went to the Stabto where I chose a glass chandelier for the members of the guitar & mandoline band to give Trombini as a wedding present. We went to the Rezzonico to call on the Brownings & found them at home. Mrs Browning in a high state of excitement because they have arranged to leave home & go to Florence for 4 months & live in a little hired apartment with 4 servants. It is curious that having that fine Palazzo Rezzonico and a house at Asolo they should have to go to Florence to a hired apartment in order to be “perfectly happy” as Mrs B. says. Home to tea– Mr Hulton called– Packed my bag preparatory to starting for Trent tomorrow morning to pay our respects to the Empress Frederick. Mr Eden & his niece & her husband Mr & Mrs Duff Gordon came to dinner. The latter are on their wedding tour. Carry was unable to come having fallen on the stairs & sprained her foot. Mrs D. Gordon played the piano to us—& her husband sang. He has a fine voice. They left us early.
